Since at least the third edition in 1979, the German Medical Licence Regulations (ÄAppO) have required doctors and dentists to demonstrate knowledge of ancient languages.
This is because ancient languages, primarily Latin and Greek, form the historical foundation of medical terminology, as they shaped anatomical terms and concepts relating to diseases and therapies.
