Francis Bacon's 'De sapientia veterum' is a collection of 31 essays on mythological figures and their interpretation. It is a work that is not easy to place in Bacon's opus because it is very confusing, not very logical, presenting an almost random structure; all this is at first sight not very inherent to the philosophy of the empiricist Bacon who often emphasised the need for stringent precision of language and concept. Why therefore treat this work in school? Because it documents attempts to understand myths in the midst of antiquity and the modern world and is therefore of cultural value; because it can be placed within a broader, interdisciplinary teaching unit on mythology; and because - a fundamental aspect it can be an authentic assignment for students and teachers. The following paper presents this authentic task: the concept, the content, the course and the results achieved.
