Florio Scifo, who holds a doctorate in Christian literature and classical philology (Università Pontificia Salesiana, Rome) and is currently chairman of the CLE Centre at the university of the same name, compares heroic figures in ancient European and Far Eastern literature in this essay. He focuses in particular on the figure of the ‘cunning’ hero, illustrated initially by the examples of Odysseus and Polyphemus, as well as Shurale and the woodcutter, with numerous references to J.R.R. Tolkien.
