Zephyr, the warm west wind that brings a new beginning and drives away the cold – who is he? His mythological biography is little known. Over the centuries, he has symbolised (despite some rather impetuous appearances) gentle joy, innocent love, patient time and the incessant cycle of life. He has also been deprived of personality and reduced to a mere meteorological phenomenon. The following essay aims, on the one hand, to present this deity and, on the other, to offer a small collection of literary passages – ancient, medieval, Renaissance and contemporary – suitable for reading in an educational context.
