Filippomaria Pontani, together with Alberto Camerotto (both teach at the University of Venice), is the initiator of an initiative that has meanwhile become known far beyond Italy: the project "I Classici contro" ("Classics against"). What is it all about? That texts from antiquity still have a lot to say to us today, that their perspectives help us to better deal with the present. It's about the big issues like democracy, demagogy, populism, togetherness, tyranny, freedom of speech, war, domination, identity, citizenship, xenophobia and integration, law and corruption, revolution and restoration, beauty and destruction of our environment, our surroundings. The ancient texts should and can help to make discussions and debates more conscious and deeper. To this end, the "Classici contro" primarily use the theatre as a stage.
